Green Gifting

Stationery Plaque

The target market for this product was an older age group of men who work office jobs. This concept of this gift made from recycled Polyvinyl Chloride Pipes was derived from the name plaques in the businessmen’s office desk. Hence it was design to fit in to the concept of a sleek sophisticated office and the user will enjoy this product as it fits with the surrounding. The stationery plaque has various uses from installing a clock in the larger pipes, holding pens in the smaller pipes; even medication such as a puffer will be able to fit in the stationery plaque. In this design I have incorporated a small area besides the PVC pipes as office people like to have photos of family or if not photo they can stick post-it note reminders, or they can make a small to-do list with chalk as the matte black finishing acts like a blackboard. Not only is this design sleek and innovative but it also takes into consideration how busy these people can be and have incorporated a system where the user can be more organized making this design functional as well as being aesthetically pleasing. This design interacts with the user by encouraging the user to be more organized (post-it note reminders), or by making this product more personal (attaching family photos), or even by just simply using this product for holding stationery such as pens, markers or anything that the user feels that must be close by at work.
The points of the Okala design guide that has been considered for this design step one, innovation and optimized function. This design has optimized functions as well as aesthetics and anyone receiving this gift within the target market will enjoy this product. Step two reducing material impacts, by using PVC pipes this allows reusing of the pipes reducing the amounts being turned into landfills or being incinerated releasing toxic fumes into the environment. Step three, manufacturing innovation, this product the stationery plaque uses two materials which both can be reused from materials found on almost any construction site, PVC pipes and MDF boards. Both these materials can release toxic fumes into the environment when incinerated or turned in at a landfill so reusing these material is actually helping prolong the material lifecycle preventing harm to the environment.
